GRAMMAR NOTES
As we saw in the monologues, “I like” in Italian is MI PIACE followed by the infinitive of the verb, for example: “I like swimming” is MI PIACE NUOTARE, “I like going to the cinema” is MI PIACE ANDARE AL CINEMA.
We can also use the verb AMARE (to love) to say that we like doing something: for example AMO GIOCARE A CALCIO (I love playing soccer).
In the monologue Francesca says VIVO A VENEZIA (I live in Venice): in Italian we use the preposition A before the name of a city when we want to say that we live there or that something is located in the city and also to say that we are going there, in place of the English “to”.
For example:
ABITO A NAPOLI (I live in Naples)
IL COLOSSEO È A ROMA (The Colosseum is in Rome)
SIAMO ANDATI IN VACANZA A PARIGI (We went to Paris on holiday)
