Ciao, mi chiamo Alessia, ho 22 anni, sono italiana e abito a Milano.

Ho un fratello e una sorella, si chiamano Paolo e Marta.

Studio lingue straniere all’università: francese e inglese.

Nel fine settimana lavoro come cameriera in un ristorante.

Nel fine settimana LAVORO come cameriera in un ristorante.

Nel tempo libero mi piace leggere libri e ascoltare musica.

We will focus on the verbs in this short text: ABITO (I live) and STUDIO (I study), and LAVORO (I work).

They all end in –O because that is the ending for the first person singular in the present tense.

In Italian we divide verbs in 3 groups according to their ending in the infinitive form.

Verbs can end in ARE, ERE, IRE.

For example:

1. ABITARE, meaning “to live”, ends in –ARE in the infinitive form, so we say it belongs to the 1st conjugation.

2. LEGGERE, meaning “to read”,  ends in -ERE, so it belongs to the 2nd conjugation.

3. DORMIRE, which means “to sleep”, ends in –IRE, so it belongs to the 3rd one.

For now, we are going to see just the first conjugation, LA PRIMA CONIUGAZIONE, as we call it, and its endings in the present tense:

For example, let’s see how to conjugate the verb: LAVORARE

You take the infinite, then you remove the ending LAVOR ARE and you add the following endings:

IO               -O

TU               -I

LUI              -A

LEI              -A

NOI              -IAMO

VOI              -ATE

LORO             -ANO

So, the full conjugation becomes:
