CONVERSATION 2 - Buongiorno!

We are going to listen to a formal dialogue between two neighbours, Mrs. Bianchi and Mr. Martini, meeting in the lift.

Listen to the dialogue at normal speed:

Sig.ra Bianchi: Buongiorno! Come sta?

Sig. Martini: Salve! Bene, grazie. E lei?

Sig.ra Bianchi: Tutto bene.

Sig. Martini: E suo marito?

Sig.ra Bianchi: Sta bene, è al lavoro adesso.

Sig. Martini: Lo saluti da parte mia.

Sign.ra Bianchi: Certo!

Sign. Martini: Arrivederci, e buona giornata.

Sig.ra Bianchi: Arrivederci, anche a lei.

Now once more, but slowly:

Grammar notes:

LEI as a courtesy form

As you can see, in this dialogue we have a formal conversation between two people, il signor Martini and la signora Bianchi. SIGNOR and SIGNORA are the Italian words for Mr. And Mrs. and we usually find them in their shortened form (Sig. and Sig.ra).

They greet each other by saying BUONGIORNO, COME STA?, so she is using the courtesy form of the verb to adress him, which in Italian corresponds to the 3rd person singular.

The pronoun used is LEI, which actually corresponds to “she”, but when used as a courtesy form it may refers to both men and women.

So, for example: if I want to ask a friend “How are you?”, I say: COME VA? or COME STAI?, but when greeting someone with the courtesy form I have to say COME STA? or LEI COME STA?

Also, in the last sentence of the dialogue, la sign.ra Bianchi replies to “Have a good day” (BUONA GIORNATA) by saying: “You too” (ANCHE A LEI). Here, again, she adresses him with the courtesy pronoun LEI.
